Southern Maryland RC&D Board Members attend 2007 Mid Atlantic RC&D Conference

From September 16th through the 19th, over 120 RC&D Board Members and NRCS employees from the Mid-Atlantic Region’s six states met in Grantsville, Pennsylvania for the 2007 Mid-Atlantic RC&D Conference. Southern Maryland RC&D was represented by Board Members Pat Pinnell, Olga Walter and Michael Pellegrino, Office Associate Denitra Brawner and RC&D Coordinator Jeremy West. The conference consisted of numerous displays by RC&D Councils and partner organizations, tours to farms and other locations showing some of the successful local RC&D projects. There were also presentations and training sessions led by Board Members and representatives from various partner organizations. Jeremy West took part in a panel discussion on RC&D funding opportunities presenting Southern Maryland RC&D’s unique conservation partnership with the United States Navy. Hanoch McCarty, co-author of the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” book series, was the Keynote Speaker. Gerald Willis, Special Assistant to the Chief, also spoke to attendees during the conference letting us all know that RC&D’s good work throughout the country has not gone unnoticed by NRCS Chief Arlen Lancaster. During the conference the Mid-Atlantic RC&D Council held its annual business meeting. Our own Olga Walter, Southern Maryland RC&D Secretary/Treasurer, was elected Vice President and Vice-Chair Pat Pinnell was re-elected as Mid-Atlantic Treasurer. Next year’s conference will be held in New Jersey on September 21st through 24th, 2008.
