Chesapeake Bay Field Lab Living Shoreline
Mar 9, 2007 - 4:49:24 PM
The Chesapeake Bay Field Lab is working closely with the St. Mary’s Soil Conservation District and Southern Maryland RC&D to restore 850 linear feet of severely eroding shoreline at the CBFL facility on St. George Creek, using a dynamic combination of groins, sills and native plantings. The project site is characterized by highly important diamondback terrapin nesting areas and peat marsh. The project will ultimately restore approximately 1 acre of this vital habitat, while providing considerable opportunities for environmental education and community involvement.

The Bay Field Lab's skipjack, Dee of St. Mary's County, is one of the region's last remaining skipjacks. Skipjack classes are available March through November.

A large section of shoreline beginning to slump off into the water, fully undercut and held in place only the persisting root structure of native marsh grass.
