Indian Head Shoreline Stabilization

The Navy, Southern Maryland RC&D, St. Mary's Soil Conservation District, Indian Head NSWC environmental personnel, National Aquarium in Baltimore and the Charles County Master Gardeners have joined forces to stabilize severely eroding shoreline at the Indian Head Naval Surface Warfare Center.  This project involves the construction of shoreline stabilization measures for over 4,000 linear feet of shoreline and extensive tidal wetland plantings along the Potomac River.  Due to the dynamic nature of this project's partnership, the project is being considered for a coveted Coastal America Partnership Award.

The shoreline has been eroding at a rate of more than four feet per year. Here an access road can be seen plainly undermined by the substantial erosion.
