Potomac Heritage Trail

Jan 20, 2009 - 4:44:11 PM

Southern Maryland RC&D, National Park Service, Oxon Hill Bicycle and Trail Club, County Government and many other partners are working hard to extend the Potomac Heritage Trail corridor into Southern Maryland’s Charles and St. Mary’s Counties.  The National Park Service recently approved Southern Maryland RC&D’s request for National Scenic Trail designation for the proposed route, a roughly 200-mile on-road bicycle route utilizing existing facilities and connecting green spaces and historic sites.  The proposed route will incorporate the Three Notch Trail and White Plains to Indian Head rails-to-trails project for trail loops with the main trail closely following the Potomac River.  Next steps include finalizing the main trail route with County Government partners, developing an interpretation plan, signage, developing marketing for trail adjacent communities and holding numerous century-rides.

The Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail is a dynamic trail experience currently extending from near Pittsburgh, PA to Point Lookout State Park, MD and includes approximately 830 miles of existing and planned trails.  For additional information please visit the following websites:
